Brief history of the show SmackDown

SmackDown is a professional wrestling television program that has been on the air since 1999. Here we discuss  a brief history of the show

1999-2002: The Show's Early Years

SmackDown first premiered on April 29, 1999, as a Thursday night show on UPN. The show was created to be a companion to WWE's flagship program, Raw, which aired on Monday nights. In its early years, SmackDown featured wrestlers from both the Raw and SmackDown rosters, but the show eventually became its own brand with its own set of wrestlers.

2002-2005: The Brand Extension

In 2002, WWE introduced the brand extension, which split the roster into two separate brands: Raw and SmackDown. This allowed for more storylines and opportunities for wrestlers to shine on their respective brands. SmackDown continued to air on Thursday nights during this time.

2005-2008: The Move to Friday Nights

In 2005, SmackDown moved to Friday nights on UPN, where it continued to air until the network merged with the WB to form the CW. The show then moved to the newly formed MyNetworkTV.

2008-2010: The Move to MyNetworkTV

SmackDown moved to MyNetworkTV in 2008 and continued to air there until 2010. During this time, the show's production values were improved, and it began to feature more high-profile matches and storylines.

2010-2016: The Move to Syfy and USA Network

In 2010, SmackDown moved to Syfy and continued to air there until 2015. The show then moved to the USA Network, where it has remained ever since. During this time, the show continued to feature top-level talent and storylines, and it also began to feature more crossover with Raw.

2016-Present: The Brand Split Returns

In 2016, WWE reintroduced the brand split, which once again split the roster into two separate brands: Raw and SmackDown. This allowed for even more opportunities for wrestlers to shine and for new storylines to be developed. SmackDown also began airing live on Tuesday nights, which allowed for more inter-brand interaction between Raw and SmackDown.

Throughout its history, SmackDown has featured some of the biggest names in professional wrestling, including The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, John Cena, and many others. It has also been home to some of the most memorable matches and moments in WWE history. Today, SmackDown remains a must-watch show for wrestling fans around the world.
